The Walkmen's new album "leaks"

Alright I'm not sure if this counts as a proper leak because it's being sold, but I thought it was worth bringing it to everyone's attention anyway.

Everyone's favorite "indie" band is getting ready to release their new album called "You And Me" on August 19th. If you're feeling charitable though you can enjoy it before everyone (or at least someone).

For just $5 you can buy it off Amie Street. The release is part of Amie Street’s “Download to Make a Difference” initiative, and the money goes to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in honor of Luca Vasallo, an 8-month-old who’s struggling with leukemia.

Sounds like a win-win situation for everyone. You get to hear the album that you'll hear a million times in every movie for the next year, and some 8-year-old won't have cancer coursing through their blood.

Dingers!

Thunderheist - Jerk It

I've been going back and forth for the last few days trying to decide whether I should sit on this and save it for an up coming podcast and blow the living fuck out of everyone's mind. After some deep He-searching I decided that it wasn't right (and that it wouldn't fit with the upcoming theme).

Plus the video is pretty great and is one of three finalists for the video (clearly the best).

So with no futher ado, I give you Thunderheist's track "Jerk It". Prepare for a mind 'esplosion.

Indian Thriller

This is what was giving Twoir the fits yesterday. Turns out that it is his machine, not the tubes.

New Crush

Start with one part Feist, add a dash of Junior Boys, and a touch of Ingmar Bergman - stir until delicious. To kick it up for special occasions, plate it with a side of classic New York hip-hop.

Have you left no sense of decency?

Grrrr....
Between when I embedded the code and when I previewed the post, YouTube yanked the video. It was that crazy Indian Thriller remake.
Just wanted to say a little something in response.
Fuck. YouTube. Their quality is shit, it's extremely difficult to filter through the garbage that's up there without directly searching for one thing, and for the past few weeks now, about 92% of videos are removed posthaste. I smell a rat. A rat that is in fact a code. A code that kills videos once they are embedded in more than 15 locations. It is teh suck.
Fuck. YouTube.

Big Ideas: Don't Get Any

Following up from what Victor9000 posted earlier, this is an entry (the winning entry?) from a contest to remix the song "Nude" by Radiohead. It's made entirely from antiquated electronic equipment.

This sort of reminds me of that time that I made love to 24 virgins at the same time. No seriously, all 24 at the same time. It was a magical experience. It's not that this video plays some role in that memory it's just that most everything reminds me of that.

Big Ideas (don't get any).

"This was quite a difficult task for everybody that entered, as Nude is in 6/8 timing, and 63bpm. Most music that's played in clubs is around 120bpm and usually 4/4 timing. It's pretty difficult to seamlessly mix a waltz beat into a DJ set.

"This resulted in lots of generic entries consisting of a typical 4/4 beat, but with arbitrary clips from "Nude" thrown in so that they qualified for the contest."

Radiohead - All I Need Video

This is a few weeks late, but I wanted to post it because it's the first time in a few years that I've enjoyed a politically-motivated rock video. Most political statements by musicians are a bit too close to P. Did's suggestion that you "VOTE OR DIE!!!!" for me to take them seriously, and while this video isn't recreating the wheel, it's quietly powerful and leaves room to reflect on the imagery.

The BPA (Brighton Port Authority)

Don't know a ton about this group, but apparently it's some new venture from Fatboy Slim and Simon Thornton. This is their second single called "Toe Jam" which is a pretty fun little track and features David Byrne. Their music video is even more fun (NSFW while being completely SFW at the same time)

Your Daily Cover

Fugazi's "Waiting Room" - Blue Ribbon Glee Club

If any of you have Comcast, "American Hardcore" is free On Demand. It's pretty great, equal parts seductive and repellent. Sadly, no Fugazi (they're "post-hardcore" according to my cool older wikibrother).

Ladytron

Ladytron needs to thank the shit out of their publicist because they're doing an amazing job. The album doesn't drop until June 3rd, but the free MP3 they're giving out is everywhere. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that the track is great, but seriously Ladytron, start thanking your publicist.

The Raconteurs

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely (2008)

I don't think this needs an introduction so here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia page about the song "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty

"Baker Street" is a song by Gerry Rafferty written in 1978. It was his first release following the legal battles surrounding the separation of the band Stealers Wheel. Rafferty was supposedly banned from the recording studio after the 1975 break up for a period of three years while the lawyers ironed out the disputes with the band's recording contract remaining obligations. The song was featured on his second solo album City to City and released as the first of three singles, marketed primarily to Adult Contemporary radio. The saxophone hook on the original was played by Raphael Ravenscroft (contrary to popular belief, it was not played by UK quiz show host Bob Holness) and the guitar solo was played by Hugh Burns. The guitar solo in the song incorporates a motif inspired by a pair of seagulls accidentally trapped in the studio during recording.

Spiral Chord

I caught this video today by the band Spiral Chord for their song "Distance to Substance" and I really love it. They're a hardcore punk band from Japan and they seem pretty crazy if this video is any evidence of their life. It was shot by Keiichi Nitta a former assistant to Terry Richardson but in my opinion the student has become the master.

He Man Woman Haters Podcast - New York vs. The World

He Men: Never on schedule, always on time.

For too long the battle has raged behind the closed doors of the He Men. Those from New York charge that they bring more to the He Table because of their proximity to arts and culture in the city that never sleeps. Those from else where contend that they have the bigger contribution to the He Feast because they're not pretentious, snobby assholes from New York. And thus the battle raged.

It's time to settle this once and for all.

There are two episodes to the latest podcast. One podcast is all music from the New York faction (Jedreski, J Bell, Hathaway, Whatevs, Ethman, and HMZ). One podcast is all music from the rest of the U.S. (Victor 9000, Mr. Poop, Korn, Adil, and Manny)

You'll notice in the sidebar there is a polling widget. This will be up for until midnight on March 30th and will determine once and for all from the He-mmunity which deserves the rightful title.

The whole thing can be downloaded directly via this link (download New York's Mix and download America's Mix).

Download the individual tracks as a ZIP file via this link (Both Mixes as a ZIP File).

Torturous Music Choices

The new issue of Mother Jones has a short little piece about music used by the U.S. military and prisons for a variety of torturous situations.

Music has been used in American military prisons and on bases to induce sleep deprivation, "prolong capture shock," disorient detainees during interrogations—and also drown out screams.
Here's the playlist: overall fairly jingoistic, but mostly fairly listenable. I can't believe Rage Against the Machine made the list. I feel like terrorists would agree with most of the song. Oh and the website has a little app that plays all the songs if you're curious about how it'd sound to torture yourself. Any songs you think should have made the list, but didn't? Leave it in the comments.
  1. Decide - Fuck Your God
  2. Dope - Die M.F. Die
  3. Dope - Take Your Best Shot
  4. Eminem - White America
  5. Eminem - Kim
  6. Barney - Barney Theme Song
  7. Drowning Pool - Let The Bodies Hit the Floor
  8. Metallica - Enter Sandman
  9. Meow Mix Theme

Asthma Boy - Later Days

This is a nice little quiet album by a band called Asthma Boy out of Bellingham, Washington for your enjoyment. It's a free download off their site which is always a nice touch for a band to do these days. The album was a recommendation off the KEXP Music That Matters podcast last week , which is a nice touch for a band to get these days. And the music is pretty good which is a nice touch for your ears. I guess you could say that this album is music to your ears. You could also say that this album is music, and your ears will listen to it. You could also say something mean and hurtful and probably racist, but lets just leave it at "music to your ears" asshole.

The Heavy

Holy crap, this is really, really great music! It's like Curtis Mayfield backed up with members of the Rebirth Brass Band and The Black Keys with production by RZA. And get a load of the album artwork! I can't find a single thing wrong with this. Plus, want to know how I found it? Their video just won best animation at London's Radar Festival.

I have dibs on this for any future He Mixes.

A New Way To Search for Music

Sadly I wasn't able to find anything for our He Brother JBell's earlier request, but I wanted to alert the fellow He Men of the greatest thing for finding music: Share Miner.

Share Miner

It's super simple: all it does is plug in a search into google looking for links on websites that begin with "http://www.megaupload.com/?d" or whatever your favorite hosting site is, along with whatever band you're looking for.

It's imperfect and a little hit or miss but it might be a good alternative if you're locked out of what.cd or something.

New Fiest Video

Are you like me? Do you stay up many nights wondering to yourself, "you know what? I wonder what it would be like if the Fourth of July fireworks show wasn't synchronized to the Star Spangled Banner but instead to Fiest's 'I Feel It All' and she's just running around orchestrating the whole thing?"

Well my He Friend, your sleepless nights are over.

A Brief History of Visual Music

via William Bowers.

Era of no music, yah, totally, not even birds and whales; music invented by primordial mucky ancestor of Lee "Scratch" Perry; shift from percussion to primitive wind instruments, maybe, by primoridal mucky ancestor of George "Caress" Gershwin; music somehow gets linked to visuals related to the performance of said music, and also to unrelated visuals/spoken & enacted audio--possibly religion's fault; composers make incidental music for Shakespeare plays and the like, plus opera is born around same time; militaries and schools and fascist leaders have "bands"; music accompanies vaudeville acts; live, and then recorded, music accompanies early "silent" cinema; music is composed for "talkies"; the "musical" evolves from its stage confines into a screen genre; vinyl allows "pure listenership," though many pissed-at-CD-&-mp3 folx will later claim that the big album covers served as visual accompaniment; television and advertising create unescapable music-filled juggernaut of talented players and vocalists hawking detergent & tobacco; Elvis, Beatles, the Who, et al, hijack fictional cinematic medium, around same time rockumentary is fashioned; The Graduate soundtrack births Scorsese & Wes Anderson, etc.; Waylon Jennings narrates "The Dukes of Hazzard"; music video brundlefucks the difference between music's promotional use in commercials/film; something about Pink Floyd's laser shows; film soundtrack CDs become either freestanding fetish pieces (rated "PG," as in Peter Gabriel/Philip Glass) or promotional mixtapes featuring songs very cynically "inspired by" the movie('s demographic potential); soundtrack albums come out for movies that don't exist; the iPod morphs one's life into the ultimate soundtracked movie, the exclusive contributors to which can be found via last.fm, etc.; Musicals make a comeback at the megaplex and on the album sales charts thanks to something Disney concocted about an undangerous Narnia high school; various indie artists release a "tribute" soundtrack to the film Two-Lane Blacktop even though it already featured period music; with the music industry in turmoil, and music writers bound by union contract to begin sentences about it with "with the industry in turmoil," Jay-Z straight-up inverts the paradigm like a faux-retired about-to-retire label-head should, by releasing American Gangster, a spontaneous, rushed-to-market, and best of all, uncynical "inspired-by" album re: a film, giving birth to the current marketplace trendbite for the relationship between cinema and music: "organic synergy."

Why there isn't a whole genre and award for best choreographed food fight music video is beyond me.

The Moldy Peaches

Continuing the throw back trend that I seem to be on, I went ahead and used my iTunes gift cards last night to get the Moldy Peaches album from 2001. I fucking loved the song "NYC is like a Graveyard" (editor's note: the album was released on 9/11) and after I saw that they were included on the Juno soundtrack I knew that it was officially time to get the album. Here is the non-DRM'd version of it for your enjoyment.

P.S. Hey HMZ, they're from Port Townsend, WA

Skillz 2007 Wrap Up

It used to be that Jan 1st of every year became the stage for [Mad] Skillz's annual rap up - a look back at everything that happened musically and culturally the year before. Get it? Instead of a "wrap up" (like how people spell it) he's a rapper so he "raps it up" instead.

Well maybe I'm just turning into my father but this is so fucking pedestrian and enormously boring that I can't believe there was a time in my life that I thought these rap ups were clever. And this year he actually spent the time to make a music video for it for some reason. So now I get to look at his fat face and his Korny mustache (yes that's "Korn" as in the mustache on the 90-year-old singer from Korn) and "laugh" at his parody of Amy Winehouse being a drunk sociopath. Thank you so much Skillz for blessing us with this.

Hemanterview: HeMan to Walkman

So, on Saturday I was in DC, killing time before the he-man convention that was HMZ's nuptials in frosty Pittsburgh. I was in a DuPont bar, about to head into the loo when the bathroom doors opened and one Hamilton Leithauser, lead singer of the Walkmen, walkmanned out. Seizing upon the opportunity to provide content for this blog, I thought I'd conduct an exclusive interview of my old schoolmate, which I herenow reproduce:

HL, looking quizzical, adjusting the zipper on his pants: Cold4thestreets? [ed's note: not my real name].

C4ts, feigining disinterest, refusing to be the first to recognize the other: Ham? Oh. Hey, man. What's up? How's it going?

HL: Good. Do you live here?

C4tS: No, no. I'm in the Bay Area now.

HL: Oh, I'm in the Bay Area all the time.

C4ts: Yeah, I think you guys played a show a couple of weeks ago. I was going to go, but I, like, you know, didn't.

HL, nonplussed: Yeah, I'm in New York.

C4ts: Yeah, cool...So, hey you guys are blowing up now. I mean, look at you [c4ts slaps HL somewhat more condescendingly than intended]--Spiderman 3 soundtrack, hunh? [ed's note: C4ts' tone might imply that HL is a sellout.]

HL, not pleased, turning to greet hipster girl in red wool coat: Yeah...Hey, what's up, Kitty? Where've you been?

Random guy to C4ts: Hey, man, are you going to use the bathroom or what?

C4ts: Yeah, sorry. I just bumped into this guy I know from high school. [Turning to HL] So, Ham it was good seeing you.

HL, whispering something to whispy blonde in red wool coat, distractedly: Yeah, see you, man.

Exit C4ts, begins to urinate.
