Whatevs' Best Of 2009
Here are all my (Whatevs) favorite songs from the final year of the aughts. At first I didn't think this was a particularly watershed year for music but after trolling through my iTunes I've settled on 39 songs that really stood out to me, and I think I've changed my initial assessment.
The order is a little crazy but I chose it to specifically call attention to each track, so there's a pretty big tonality disparity between each track. It's not a mixtape. It's a bunch of songs that are pretty different from one another. There's some rock, some R&B, some rock, some hip-hop, some rock, some alt-country, and ten other kinds of rock.
Hope you enjoy.

Reverse Engineering "Smack My Bitch Up"
They should do this with every song ever. Did you have any idea "Bulls On Parade" was sampled in this song?

Passion Pit – Little Secrets
The latest video from Passion Pit is very . . . what's the word I'm looking for . . . Trony.
Passion Pit's "Little Secrets" (sorry embedding was turned off because apparently they didn't realize it's 2009).

Ninjasonik Video
Nicholas Chatfield-Taylor--friend of the people, dear compatriot of the Hemen--teamed up with Ninjasonik to produce this video for the group's remix of Matt & Kim's Daylight. Very cute (in a str8 hipster/gangsta way).

DOJ Best of Jay-Z Mix
DJ Ayres curates a Sir Hova Best Of , which does NOT include: "#1 singles you’ve heard a million times, lazy one-take flows, lyrics about inventing the button-down shirt, songs dissing rappers who would later be signed to Jay-Z’s label, and songs produced by Eminem."

Dope
No one takes it back to the ol' school quite like the Meaning of Dope. I don't quite remember how I stumbled upon this site, but it's like memory lane if memory lane were an infinite gold rope.

Design Nerdz
Is there something inherently–almost unforgivably–buzzkillish about graphically representing the data within music and song? Of course. But it sure is pretty when Jax de Leon does it.
P.i.X.
London DJ Hanna Hanra runs this quality music zine, P.i.X. with another DJ, Princess Julia (who was in the Visage "Fade to Grey" video for chrissakes). The zine's hot to death. While you may only enjoy the "free" part of their "It's Free and It's a Poster" slogan online, you won't be sorry.

Onward and Upward with the Supervillain
MF Doom in the new New Yorker. Surely worth the price of subscription.
Blakroc Project
Every once in a while, a new record makes it exciting and acceptable to be an adult who listens to contemporary Hip-Hop. It looks like this will be 2009's excuse to celebrate. (Yes, that's Dame Dash talking to the Black Keys.)

He Man Woman Haters Podcast #16
We decided to take on a different course for this podcast. Rather than put together the latest and greatest tracks in the world, we decided instead to choose only tracks put out before 1990. We dug deep into our archives and found classics that might have been overlooked or not enjoyed enough. So without further ado here are the pre-1990s.

Eric Wareheim X Major Lazer
If the Heman Woman Haters found a genie's lamp and had 3-5 wishes, this video's creation would not have been one. But it would have come close. Very close.

Hype Machine's 2008 Zeitgeist
If you've ever wondered how to get your digital hands on some free MP3s then you're probably not reading this blog right now. And if that's the case, I'd like you to listen to the sound of this one hand clapping and let me know about a tree that's falling in the woods with no one around to hear it.
But if you are here and you have gotten your digi-hands on some free MP3s you've no doubt used The Hype Machine. You probably already know what a fantastic resource it is and what a great judge of new music the informed and interesting masses are.
Then in that case, I'd like to make sure that you were aware of their Zeitgeist of 2008. Top 50 albums, Top 50 Songs and Top 50 Artists. All streamable for free. Seems like a great deal.
